What APSC actually is.

Before the syllabus: what this exam selects for, when it started, and the problem it was created to solve.

what_it_is

What the exam is

The APSC Combined Competitive Examination selects officers for the Assam Civil Service, Assam Police Service and allied state services. It runs in three stages — an objective Prelims, a written Mains of an Essay and five General Studies papers, and an interview — and is open to graduates of any discipline.

when_it_started

When it started

The Assam Public Service Commission was constituted in 1937 under the Government of India Act 1935, making it one of the oldest state commissions in the country.

why_it_exists

Why it exists

Before public service commissions existed, senior appointments were made at the discretion of the executive. Constituting them — and later writing them into Article 315 of the Constitution — was a deliberate move to put recruitment behind an open competitive examination that the government of the day cannot quietly influence.

// overview

What this course is.

The APSC Combined Competitive Examination rewards two things: a wide, accurate factual base and the ability to write a structured answer under time pressure. Most aspirants build the first and never build the second. This programme builds both in parallel from week one.

The Mains is six written papers — an Essay and five General Studies papers of 250 marks each, answered in English or Assamese — followed by a 180-mark interview. There is no optional subject; one of the five General Studies papers is entirely on Assam, as are 30–35% of the questions in Prelims General Studies I. Assam's history, geography, economy, polity and current affairs therefore run as their own track through the course, alongside the national syllabus.

APSC — straight answers.

Do I need a specific graduation stream?
No. APSC CCE needs a bachelor's degree in any discipline, and the current Mains has no optional subject — it is an Essay and five General Studies papers — so your stream does not decide your papers.
Who is eligible for APSC CCE?
For CCE-2025: an Indian citizen and original inhabitant of Assam, aged 21 to 38 on 1 January 2025 (43 for SC/ST, 41 for OBC/MOBC, and 10 more years for PwBD candidates), holding a degree, registered with a District Employment Office in Assam, and able to speak Assamese or another official or tribal language of the state.
What is the APSC CCE exam pattern?
Prelims: two objective papers of 200 marks, two hours each; General Studies II only has to be passed at 33%, and a quarter of a question's marks is deducted for a wrong answer. Mains: an Essay and five General Studies papers of 250 marks each, then a 180-mark interview — 1,680 marks in all. The Prelims score does not count towards the final merit.
Is Assam GS covered separately?
Yes, and the syllabus is the reason: 30–35% of Prelims General Studies I is about Assam, and General Studies V in the Mains is a 250-mark paper entirely on Assam. It runs as its own track, with separate notes, tests and a revision cycle — alongside the national General Studies syllabus, not instead of it.
How is answer writing evaluated?
Weekly. You submit a script, a faculty member marks it with written feedback, and you re-attempt the same question. Structure is corrected before content, because structure is what most scripts lose marks on.
Can working professionals join?
Yes — the evening and weekend batches exist for exactly that. Plan for 20–25 hours a week outside class, and be honest with yourself about it before you enrol.
