What CUET (UG & PG) actually is.

Before the syllabus: what this exam selects for, when it started, and the problem it was created to solve.

what_it_is

What the exam is

CUET is a common entrance test for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at central and a widening list of other universities. You choose the domain subjects matching your target courses, plus a general test and a language paper. It is computer-based and conducted by the NTA.

when_it_started

When it started

A shared entrance test began in 2010 as CUCET, used by a handful of central universities. The UGC replaced it with CUET for undergraduate admissions in 2022, with CUET-PG arriving the same year. Adoption has since spread well beyond central universities.

why_it_exists

Why it exists

Admission used to run on board percentages that were never comparable between boards — a 92% from one board and a 92% from another did not mean the same thing, and cut-offs drifted towards 100%. One test gave every applicant the same yardstick regardless of which board they sat.

// overview

What this course is.

CUET is not one exam, it is a set of subject papers you choose. The single biggest determinant of a CUET score is choosing the right combination for the universities you want, and then preparing narrow and deep rather than wide and shallow.

Counselling on subject selection happens before teaching starts. Then domain subjects, language, and the general test run in parallel through to the exam window.

// exam_faq

CUET (UG & PG) — straight answers.

How many domain subjects should I take?
Enough to cover your target universities and no more. Every extra subject dilutes preparation time; we set this in the week-one counselling session against your actual application list.
Is CUET PG covered too?
Yes, as a separate track — PG papers are subject-specific and deeper, and are taught against the relevant university's syllabus.
Does this clash with board exam preparation?
The domain syllabus overlaps heavily with class 11–12 NCERT, which is deliberate. The after-school and weekend batches are timed so board preparation is reinforced, not competed with.
