What UPSC actually is.

Before the syllabus: what this exam selects for, when it started, and the problem it was created to solve.

what_it_is

What the exam is

UPSC's Civil Services Examination selects officers for the IAS, IPS, IFS and the central Group A and Group B services. It runs in three stages — an objective Prelims, a written Mains with an optional subject, and a Personality Test — and is open to graduates of any discipline.

when_it_started

When it started

UPSC traces back to the Public Service Commission set up in 1926, which became the Federal Public Service Commission under the Government of India Act 1935 and the Union Public Service Commission when the Constitution came into force in 1950.

why_it_exists

Why it exists

Before public service commissions existed, senior appointments were made at the discretion of the executive. Writing the commissions into Article 315 of the Constitution put recruitment to the all-India services behind an open competitive examination that the government of the day cannot quietly influence.

// overview

What this course is.

UPSC's Civil Services Examination fills the IAS, IPS, IFS and the central Group A and Group B services. It has the same three-stage shape as APSC — Prelims, Mains, Interview — but a heavier Mains: an optional subject of two papers and two qualifying language papers sit alongside the Essay and four General Studies papers, and the Personality Test carries 275 marks.

UPSC aspirants join the same batches as our APSC course and share its General Studies core and weekly answer-writing clinic, with an extended track for the optional subject and the CSAT paper.

UPSC — straight answers.

Who is eligible for the UPSC Civil Services Examination?
For CSE-2026: a graduate aged 21 to 32 on 1 August 2026, with the upper age limit relaxed for reserved categories. General and EWS candidates get six attempts; OBC and PwBD candidates nine; SC/ST candidates are not limited by attempts within the age limit.
What is the UPSC CSE exam pattern?
Prelims: two objective papers of 200 marks, two hours each, with a third of a question's marks deducted for a wrong answer; Paper II (CSAT) only has to be passed at 33%. Mains: two qualifying language papers of 300 marks, then an Essay, four General Studies papers and two optional-subject papers of 250 marks each — 1,750 marks — and a 275-mark Personality Test, 2,025 in all.
How is UPSC different from APSC?
UPSC recruits for the all-India and central services, APSC for Assam's state services. UPSC's Mains has an optional subject and two qualifying language papers; APSC's is an Essay and five General Studies papers with no optional. A wrong Prelims answer costs a third of the question's marks at UPSC and a quarter at APSC. The General Studies core overlaps heavily, which is why the two courses share batches.
Can working professionals join?
Yes — the evening and weekend batches exist for exactly that. Plan for 20–25 hours a week outside class, and be honest with yourself about it before you enrol.
