What the exam is

NDA selects candidates straight after class 12 for the tri-service academy at Khadakwasla. CDS and AFCAT select graduates for the Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers Training Academy. Every one of them clears a written paper first, then faces the five-day Services Selection Board.

When it started

India adopted the SSB method in 1943, from the British War Office Selection Board. The National Defence Academy was established at Khadakwasla in 1954. The Air Force introduced AFCAT in 2011, and following a Supreme Court order in 2021 women sat the NDA examination, with the first women cadets joining in 2022.

Why it exists

The written paper only establishes that you can study. The SSB exists because the services are selecting for what a paper cannot measure — judgement under pressure, how you behave in a group when nobody has been made leader, and whether what you say about yourself matches what three independent assessors watch you do over five days.

What this course is.

Clearing the written paper for NDA, CDS or AFCAT gets you to the Services Selection Board. That is where the actual selection happens, over five days of psychological testing, group tasks and a personal interview — and it is the stage almost nobody prepares for systematically.

This programme covers the written papers properly and then treats SSB as its own syllabus: OIR, PPDT, psychological tests, GTO tasks and the personal interview.

Algebra, trigonometry, calculus and statistics at NDA and CDS level.

Defence Exams — straight answers.

Can I join only for SSB preparation?

Yes. The weekend SSB clinic is open to candidates who have already cleared the written stage elsewhere.

What is the eligibility for NDA versus CDS?

NDA is for candidates after class 12 (unmarried, age 16.5–19.5); CDS is for graduates. AFCAT is for graduates for the Air Force. We confirm eligibility before enrolment — there is no point preparing for a paper you cannot sit.

Is physical fitness part of the programme?

SSB includes physical group tasks and the medical board follows selection. We provide the standards and a preparation schedule; the running is yours.
