Before the syllabus: what this exam selects for, when it started, and the problem it was created to solve.
what_it_is
TET and CTET are eligibility tests rather than recruitment exams — clearing one qualifies you to be appointed as an elementary school teacher. Paper I covers classes I to V, Paper II covers classes VI to VIII, and both carry a 30-mark Child Development and Pedagogy section alongside language and subject papers.
when_it_started
The Right to Education Act of 2009 set minimum qualifications for elementary school teachers. NCTE guidelines made a teacher eligibility test compulsory from 2010, and the first CTET was conducted in 2011, with Assam running its own state TET alongside. CTET certificates were made valid for life in 2021.
why_it_exists
The RTE Act guaranteed every child a school place, which meant a very large number of teachers had to be appointed quickly. A national eligibility floor was introduced so that expansion did not come at the cost of who stands in front of the class — and it tests pedagogy, not just subject knowledge, for exactly that reason.

Candidates lose TET and CTET on the pedagogy section, not the subject section. Child Development and Pedagogy carries 30 marks in both papers and is the most predictable, most learnable part of the paper — and the part most self-study candidates skim.
Paper I (classes I–V) and Paper II (classes VI–VIII) share the pedagogy core, then split by subject stream.
