What the exam is

The Directorate of Health Services runs public health across Assam's districts — hospitals, primary and community health centres, and state health programmes. The Directorate of Medical Education runs the government medical colleges and teaching hospitals. Both recruit technical, paramedical and administrative staff through a written paper pairing general studies with post-specific questions.

Both directorates are long-standing arms of the Assam health department, and each historically issued its own post-by-post notifications. Recruitment has moved steadily toward larger common written examinations, in line with the broader state shift that produced ADRE.

Why it exists

Assam's health system has to fill a very wide spread of roles — lab technicians, pharmacists, clerks, Grade IV staff — across two directorates and every district in the state. Consolidating scattered notifications into common examinations made those vacancies predictable enough for a candidate to actually prepare for.
