What Banking actually is.

Before the syllabus: what this exam selects for, when it started, and the problem it was created to solve.

what_it_is

What the exam is

IBPS conducts a common examination recruiting Probationary Officers and Clerks for the public sector banks; the State Bank of India runs its own on a closely similar pattern. Both go through a speed-driven Prelims, a deeper Mains with banking awareness and a descriptive paper, and an interview for officer grades.

when_it_started

When it started

A selection unit was set up in 1975 under the National Institute of Bank Management to serve the newly nationalised banks, and became the independent Institute of Banking Personnel Selection in 1984. The Common Written Examination replaced bank-by-bank hiring in 2011.

why_it_exists

Why it exists

After nationalisation every public sector bank recruited separately, so a candidate sat a dozen near-identical exams in a year while the banks duplicated the same administrative effort. One common examination feeding a shared merit pool ended both problems at once.

// overview

What this course is.

Banking exams are the most time-pressured papers in the recruitment calendar. Prelims gives you roughly 20 minutes per section; there is no version of this where you 'work it out'. Recognition and elimination are the skills being tested.

Mains adds data interpretation depth, banking awareness, and a descriptive paper. PO candidates continue into structured interview preparation.

Banking — straight answers.

Is Clerk preparation separate from PO?
The prelims core is common. PO candidates continue into mains-level DI, the descriptive paper and interview preparation; Clerk candidates go deeper on prelims speed and accuracy.
How is the descriptive paper handled?
Weekly letter and essay submissions with written evaluation, same as the answer-writing clinic on the APSC track.
Do you cover RRB (Regional Rural Bank) exams?
Yes, under the same track — the pattern is close enough to IBPS that the core preparation carries over, with a separate Hindi/regional language note.
